The through-line: AI produces the game; you decide whether it’s fun. No model judges feel — it will happily generate a technically perfect loop nobody wants to play twice.
The funnel that actually finishes games
- Collect ideas without filtering. Cheap and endless — grade them later, never discard them early.
- Shortlist by buildability × fun potential.
- Prototype in bulk, tiny. One file, one mechanic, one input axis, playable on desktop and phone. The prototype’s only job is answering is this fun enough to deserve production? — build it in an hour, not a week. (In my own case a wave of twelve playable prototypes came together in half a day — that speed is exactly what AI changed, and the judging is what it didn’t.)
- Kill honestly. Most prototypes fail the fun test. That’s the system working.
- Promote the survivors to production — this is the part everyone skips: an in-gameplay tutorial (no text walls), a difficulty curve, “juice” (screen shake, slow-mo, satisfying feedback), balancing, real sound, and an ending state that makes players want another run.
- Ship to portals, then measure — retention and replays tell you what to build next.
Distribution: web-first, stores only for winners
Publish HTML5 to browser portals first — itch.io, and portals like Poki or CrazyGames that bring their own audience and share ad revenue. Publishing costs nothing and someone else owns the traffic, which is exactly what a solo lacks. Only titles the web already proved deserve the expensive step: wrapping for app stores with something like Capacitor and adding ads or a small paid unlock.
The honest money expectation: browser-game income for a solo is real but modest, and it arrives as a portfolio effect — several small titles earning portal revenue share — not one jackpot. Treat each game as a cheap bet plus a portfolio asset, and the maths works; treat one as your lottery ticket and it won’t.
What this shares with every other solo production
Same three human links as the whole stack: judgement (is it fun), continuity (does the game feel like one thing), accountability (does it actually work on a stranger’s phone). And the same closing truth: building stopped being the bottleneck — being found didn’t.
